We're launching this new series in response to many requests for in-depth workshops and training on key topics within Child Protection. Classes are limited to 20 to enable personal guidance and deep discussion.

This session will be led by AoCPP Director, Wendy Thorogood and Vice Chair, Dr Sam Warner:

Advanced Level: Understanding and working with Fabricated and Induced Illness

 

Thursday 25th March 10-1pm

Both Wendy and Sam have extensive experience of Fabricated and Induced Illness, working with both children and parents and in respect of strategic development with regards to this issue. They bring together theory, research and practice knowledge in this field, addressing issues from the medical setting, social care and mental health.

AIMS: To introduce practitioners to core concepts in identifying and understanding Fabricated or Induced Illness/ FII in order to enable practitioners to make sense of perplexing illness presentations and to manage situations where children may be at risk of FII.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:   By the end of the course participants will be able to:

Identify the key characteristics associated with FII

Understand the social context of the development of FII

Be introduced to assessments tools that assist in the recognition of FII

Be able to identify what FII is and what it is not

Consider FII from parent and child perspectives, including where children and young people themselves FII

Have increased confidence, knowledge and skills in raising concerns with families

Identify some of the personal systemic barriers to recognising, raising and acting on concerns about FII

Explore the process and dynamics of a multi-agency approach to FII and current procedures to investigate concerns

Rolling program and bespoke training and consultancy

 Biographies:

Wendy Thorogood Is a retired  Designated Nurse Consultant. "After 40 years of service in the NHS, FII was first brought to her attention during training on covert surveillance in London.  Wendy has been involved in NHS Acute and Community service in clinical leadership roles, 20 of which have been within safeguarding children, with experience in serious case reviews with specialist training locally and nationally, including the development of the National Leadership program for Designated Nurses. She is working to improve the health outcomes for all children, ensuring a child-centered approach to safeguarding with Organisational Responsibility as set out in the Children’s Act 2004 to ensure the CCG fulfils the statutory responsibility. Wendy is the current chair and acting Director of AoCPP 

Dr Sam Warner is a chartered and consultant clinical psychologist, working in child protection and mental health. She holds an honorary lecturership in the School of Health and Society at Salford University, specialising in sexual violence, child abuse, domestic abuse and related issues such as trauma, attachment difficulties, dissociation (including working with visions, voices and dissociated parts), self-harm and suicide.

Sam has run sexual violence services in the voluntary sector and statutory mental health services and acted as the external examiner for the Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust and the Open University for their training on behalf of the UK Government on personality disorder and forensic services. She recently acted as clinical lead for Cambian Humberside providing specialist placements for girls at risk of sexual exploitation and has published books and papers on child protection and mental health. She also works as an expert witness in childcare proceedings, addressing needs and providing risk assessments of risk to self, risk to others and risk from others (including FII). Sam is currently the vice-chair of AoCPP.
