This session will be led by Professor Brid Featherstone and Dr Yuval Saar-Heiman

Poverty Aware Practice in Child Protection

 Tuesday 20th April 10-1pm

Aim:

To explore the relationship between poverty, child abuse and neglect based upon the national and international evidence and identify promising policy and practice frameworks in this area.

Objectives:

By the end of the session participants will be able to:

Use the evidence to inform their understandings of the relationship between poverty, child abuse and neglect. Develop policy and practice frameworks to enhance the work they do with families and  contribution to the strategic work of their organisation

Professor Brid Featherstone

Professor Featherstone was a member of the highly influential UK wide Child Welfare Inequalities project which explored the links between deprivation and a child’s chances of becoming subject to child protection interventions and being looked after.

She has extensive experience of training and consultancy with organisations and individual practitioners on poverty aware practice. She has researched the issues involved in child protection and family support over many years with a particular focus on the experiences of families and working with men.

She is co-author of Re-imagining Children: towards humane social work with families and Protecting Children: A Social Model (both published by Policy Press).

Dr Yuval Sarr-Heiman

Dr Yuval Saar-Heiman is a Senior Research Fellow in the Social Work Department, Royal Holloway University of London.

His research deals with the Poverty-Aware social work Paradigm and with the intersection of poverty, child protection and social work practice.

Based on his experience as a social work practitioner and supervisor in the Israeli Child Protection System, Yuval's work addresses the ways in which poverty and social inequality come into play in the everyday encounters between families, children and child protection professionals.
