Domestic Violence and Abuse Special Interest Group

'Learning From Reviews'

13th June 2024, 9:30am - 11:30am

Speaker: Sam Warner

Chair: Dr Michaela Rogers

Dr Sam Warner, is a chartered and consultant clinical psychologist and chair of AOCPP.

This talk is about my work with child and adult, victims and perpetrators of domestic abuse. I draw on my work as an expert witness providing whole family assessments in childcare proceedings and as a therapist, working with children who are looked after, their carers and families.

I start by setting the context in terms of reflecting on the knowledge base and how knowledge shapes our understanding of what counts as domestic abuse, and how we act to safeguard children and vulnerable adults. I then consider grooming tactics and mental health impacts, and other potential intersecting vulnerabilities.

I provide a framework for conducting whole family assessments in the family courts and provide an overview of how I work with children who are looked after, their families and/ or carers, in the context of domestic abuse.

Culture in Child Protection Special Interest Group

'How can we ensure that we acknowledge and respond to race in child protection'

23rd May 2024, 9.30am - 11.30am

Speakers: Isobel Drew (Chair) and Vanisha Jassal (Vice Chair)

Areas of exploration within this meeting:

The issue of race has had some meaningful but limited exploration within multiagency child protection work within the UK. Our meeting will begin to explore the challenges and opportunities to progress critically reflective, culturally competent, and anti-racist work within practice.

The meeting will first consider the contemporary landscape and research context supporting our understanding of race within the sphere of child protection with a focus on key thinking and learning. The meeting will consider contextual and intersecting factors that currently impact issues or race, racism, and disproportionality. The meeting will also engage you in reflecting on your own organisational context and actions and activity that could make a positive contribution to the acknowledgment and response to race within child protection.

27th September 2023, 10:00 am - 12:00 pm

Speaker: Juice Vamosi

SIG Chair: Dr Dan Allen

On the 27th September, I will run a session entitled, 'A Romale, A Chavale' and bring the linguist, filmmaker and producer, Juice Vamosi in to join our discussion.

Introducing excerpts from selected films and documentaries, Juice and I will highlight and discuss the specific challenges faced by Central and Eastern European Roma people living in Britain. After introducing the history and heritage of Roma people, contemporary issues related to family and child welfare will be considered.

Throughout the session, Juice and I will invite questions from the SIG and draw on the films, documentaries, and some unseen footage, to consider ways to stand in solidarity with Central and Eastern European Roma people to help bring about fairness and family justice.

After the presentation, there will be an opportunity to talk to Juice about his experiences of producing films and documentaries with Roma people across Europe.
