The AoCPP’s Lunch and Learn
'Working Together to Safeguard Gypsy, Roma and Traveller Children and Families'
20 April 2023, 12.00pm - 1.30pm
Speaker: Dr Dan Allen, Principal Lecturer in Social Work, Liverpool Hope University
Summary: This lunch and learn session will introduce you to the history and context of child protection practice with Gypsy, Roma and Traveller peoples in the UK. Drawing on contemporary research, a thematic analysis of nine serious case reviews and extensive case work experience, the session will highlight the importance of recognising the diversity and individuality of Gypsy, Roma and Traveller children and their experiences. Viewing contemporary concerns and practice examples through the lens of transgenerational trauma, the scale and nature of child protection will be considered before we come together as a group to identify and debate practical solutions for (good) practice, community engagement and a pro-Romani and Traveller approach to child protection.

Dr Allen is a social work academic with over 20-years experience working to democratise child protection practice with Romani and Traveller families. He has published widely on this topic and has represented child protection practitioners working to support Romani and Traveller families at the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights, the House of Lords, and the Welsh Assembly. Dr Allen is particularly interested in examining the intersection of power relations, prejudice and reflexivity to critically examine the questions of why, how and so what in the context of dominant discourses affecting regimes of practice at individual, cultural and societal levels. Dr Allen is a qualified social worker registered with the professional regulatory body, Social Work England, and he is an active member of the Gypsy, Roma, and Traveller Social Work Association.
It has improved my knowledge and understanding about the range of harms caused to children and their impact as I have been able to network with a wide range of experts from the UK and beyond. There is no other multidisciplinary association for child protection professionals focused on learning to support and improve practice and policy
