Overview:
In this presentation, Dr Warner will draw on her experience of working in the field of sexual violence over the last four decades to explore how survivor activism, as well as serious case reviews and inquiries, have helped shape legislation and impacted how services have evolved to address sexual abuse. Dr Warner will start by considering safeguarding and sexual violence over previous centuries in order to set the stage for a more sustained focus on the past forty years. Her aim is to talk about some of the challenges, rewards and insights of working in child and adult safeguarding and mental health to draw out the key issues that run as a golden thread from the 1980s to the present day. In particular, she argues for the ongoing need to speak truth to power; to value our collective/ survivor-based knowledge; and to make visible the intersections between sex, power and gender.
