Digital Safeguarding SIG Meeting | Bridging gaps: tackling information recording, retrieving, and sharing challenges in Leeds and Newham

Social Finance is a not-for-profit consultancy that works with governments, charities and business worldwide. They have worked in Children’s Services for over a decade, and have a large programme focused on addressing the very largest and most entrenched digital and data challenges within social work.

In this session, Millie, Magda and Harry from the Data + Digi team discuss two recent children’s services projects; a research project exploring barriers to information sharing within children’s social care and another which sought to gain a deeper understanding of the challenges being experienced by social workers through their recording on case management systems.

This session discusses the findings from these two research projects, and explores the practical steps that can be made to address these challenges locally. And finally, it offers a deep dive into the wider opportunities to bring about systemic change in these areas.

Harry Angus is an Associate within the Data + Digi team at Social Finance. During his time at Social Finance he has worked on a range of projects focusing on how frontline staff interact with data and how information sharing can be improved to support good practice, predominantly in the Children's Social Care arena. Before Social Finance, Harry spent several years at Bristol City Council, where he supported the development of a large vulnerability shared data platform and led the DLUHC funded Data Accelerator Programme across the Avon and Somerset region, which sought to improve how agencies shared data to better support vulnerable children.

Magda Jurczuk joined Social Finance in 2023 as a senior design researcher with a background in public health research projects and quality improvement in health services. Since joining SF, she has led user research with social workers, care-experienced young people, parents and carers. Insights from this work informed the development of early stage solutions to reduce practitioners' recording burden. Magda has also delivered coaching sessions on explorative user research, service concept development, prototyping and co-design for teams that are part of the Health Foundation's Tech Enabled Care Programme.

Millie Devereux is the Design & Research practice lead at Social Finance, passionate about designing and prototyping services based on a deeper understanding of people’s needs, experiences and behaviours. She has a strong interest in bringing creative participatory research methods to policy, communication and service design. Millie joined Social Finance from the Government Digital Service, where she was a Senior User Researcher. Before this, she worked at the Behavioural Insights Team, where she led behaviour change projects across the policy spectrum, from sexual health technology to violence prevention.
