Laura Tucker is a mental health and social care researcher at the University of York, and Practitioner-Research Operational Lead within the NIHR Research Support Service Specialist Centre for Social Care. Her research interests are in professional social work roles and mental health need and support in marginalised and excluded communities. She is a qualified social worker and came into research from practice, with fifteen years experience in the voluntary and statutory sectors
Professor Michaela Rogers is a Senior Lecturer in Social Work in the School of Sociological Studies, Politics and International Relations at the University of Sheffield. Michaela is a registered social worker and has practice experience spanning 30 years in a range of voluntary and public sector settings. This includes over 15 years working in the domestic abuse
sector before moving to statutory social work (working in child protection and fostering). Michaela’s academic career has enabled the development of research and publications portfolio contributing to the fields of gender-based violence and domestic abuse, equalities and diversity, and social care. This work has a particular emphasis on the experiences of marginalised groups, help-seeking and access to services. Michaela’s publications include a number of social work textbooks and a body of academic publications on gender-based violence. Her latest co-edited book
is entitled Gender-Based Violence: A Comprehensive Guide (published in June 2023 by Springer Nature). Michaela is Co-Editor for the journal Practice: Social Work in Action and co-leads the University of Sheffield Interpersonal Violence and Abuse ( ShIVAR ) Research Network.
Robbie Duschinsky is a Professor at the University of Cambridge. He has served as Chair of the NIHR Local Authority Pre-Doctoral Fellowship review panel and Deputy Chair of the NIHR Research for Social Care review panel. He is the author of Sustaining Social Work (Palgrave) and The Psychology of Attachment (Routledge).
I think Child Abuse Review has gone from strength to strength and is of a consistently high standard. We have held numerous events that have been inspiring and enabling, such as the most recent Congresses and the Trainer's conference and award ceremony, the seminars to disseminate lessons from Serious Case Reviews. As resources get ever tighter, professionals have fewer and fewer opportunities to come together to exchange ideas and to learn together. We move more and more into silos because of work pressures. This is not the way to keep children safe. Association of Child Protection Professionals is needed to bring people concerned about child protection together to learn, to think, to shape policy and practice and to disseminate research. No-one else does this.
